A fence job starts before anyone touches a post. The line gets located, property markers get checked, and if a fence sits close to a boundary or a shared line with a neighbor, that gets confirmed first. From there old fencing comes out, posts get set, rails go up, and panels or pickets get hung, with gates fitted last since they need the rest of the frame to be square.

Most fence failures trace back to what happened below ground, not what you can see above it. A post set too shallow, or set in loose backfill instead of concrete, will lean within a couple seasons. Sacramento's clay soil swells when the winter rains soak in and shrinks hard when summer heat dries it out, and that movement is what pushes on posts that weren't set deep enough or braced right. Wood that sits in direct ground contact without a barrier rots from the bottom up long before the rest of the fence shows its age.

Ask what depth the posts are going into and whether they're set in concrete or just tamped soil. Ask what the wood is, since pressure treated pine, cedar, and redwood all hold up differently against sun and moisture, and a cheap grade of any of them will warp faster than a good one.

How it runs

  1. Line and layout The fence line and post spacing get marked out and property boundaries get confirmed.
  2. Demo Old fencing and damaged posts are removed and hauled off site.
  3. Post setting Posts are set to depth and secured with concrete footings.
  4. Rails and panels Rails go up first, then panels, pickets, or mesh are hung.
  5. Gates and hardware Gates are framed last so they hang square against the finished fence.
