This job starts with clearing what's there, whether that's a dead lawn, old rock, or bare dirt, then grading and leveling the ground underneath. Soil prep is the part that gets skipped when a job is rushed, and it's the part that decides whether sod actually roots, whether rock stays put, or whether mulch just washes away in the first hard rain.

Sacramento's clay soil compacts hard and drains slowly, so sod laid straight onto unamended clay struggles to root and often shows seams and dead patches within a season. Rock installed without a weed barrier fabric underneath looks clean for a few months and then starts sprouting weeds up through the gaps, which is much harder to deal with once the rock is down than before. Mulch piled up against tree trunks and stems, sometimes called volcano mulching, traps moisture against the bark and invites rot and pests right at the base of the plant.

Ask whether the soil gets amended or graded before sod goes down. Ask if fabric goes under rock, and how deep the mulch will be, since a couple inches spread evenly works far better than a thick pile against every stem.

How it runs

  1. Clear the area Old lawn, rock, weeds, or debris are removed from the site.
  2. Grade and prep soil The ground is leveled and amended so water drains instead of pooling.
  3. Install material Sod is laid, rock is spread over fabric, or mulch is placed around plants and beds.
  4. Water in New sod gets watered thoroughly to help it root into the prepared soil.
